The Scottish Schools Pipe Band Championships is a showcase of the talent of our young musicians designed to promote the playing of our national instruments. Competition categories provide a forum for top level competition as well as a positive and encouraging environment for school pipe bands with minimal or no competing experience. The second Sunday in March sees hundreds of young people from across Scotland and England converge on Edinburgh for a day of music, friendship and fun.
We believe every school pupil should have the chance to learn the pipes and drums on the same basis as other school instrument tuition. If you can learn the trumpet or violin in school why not pipes and drums? The Championships is a first step towards helping put that right by showing the power of piping and the force for good it can be in our schools.
Its not just about traditional pipe band formats either. Our innovative Freestyle category sees school pipe bands joining forces with other instrumentalists to show the talent of our young musicians. There is no other competition like it in the pipe band world – check out some of the 2015 performances here on the video. Freestyle is all about showing the versatility of the pipes, the skill of the players and the imagination of school music departments weaving together memorable performances.
The Championships are independently organised by the Scottish Schools Pipes and Drums Trust (SSPDT). They carry the support of the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association (RSPBA) but are not a RSPBA competition.
